DML - Is Turmeric safe?
Turmeric has been used medicinally for almost 5,000 years. Having researched many scholarly articles, websites/databases, and clinical trials/studies to try to find new information regarding turmeric and if it is suggested to be avoided, but I could not find any credible source that advises turmeric shouldn't be taken.
It has been used traditionally to help health issues like skin disorders, inflammation/irritation problems, digestive issues, general sickness, and infection. Turmeric has a rich store of antioxidants that help protect cells from free radicals. It is a flowering root plant in the ginger family, the roots of which are often also used in cooking. Many cultures use turmeric in their day-to-day cooking, Indian cuisine for example.
It gets its antioxidants and anti-inflammation properties from its active ingredient, curcumin. Curcumin itself is a powerful immune-balancing flavonoid found in the turmeric root. It works by inhibiting excess cytokine production and obstructs the activity of enzymes that trigger inflammation.
Looking further into turmeric being deemed "safe", it is "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) as a food ingredient by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is still advised as safe!
